Subject: 16-bit daughter-board and sampling
Just thought I'd add my say about this talk about 1Meg on the GUS not being
enough. If most programs for the GUS use the Software Developement Kit supplied
by Gravis, or implement the methods used in this kit, then the 1Meg DRAM that's
on-board won't actually be used for sampling. The main reason for this is that
DMA transfer operates at a much higher rate than 44.1kHz and so the sample
should, ideally, be transferred directly into main memory. Thus the only
restriction to sampling is how much memory the program can access at this speed.
This will depend on the efficiency of the programs use of high memory, i.e.
wether it can use Extended memory directly (as in windows) or the time wasted
transferring a chunk of main memory into extended memory. I hope everything I've
stated here is correct, otherwise I'll be grossly shown-up!

I have found the 3D effects in DOOM very useful, especially when
playing in Modem-VS mode. It might help if you turn off the music,
so you can hear WHERE the sound is coming from exactly. Playing my
friend, who has a SBPro, I have a clear advantage over him because I
can HEAR exactly which direction he's in, even on large speakers. So
for all DOOM players out there... learn to trust the GUS!

This has probably been asked before, but I can't find the
answer anywhere. Is there a way to get Gabriel Knight: Sins of
the Fathers (Sierra On-Line) to work with the GUS in native mode?
I tried using the GUS Sierra Drivers, but the game just crashed
when I used them. I'm sick of listening to the cheesy Sound Blaster
FM on this game. (I have a SB as well as a GUS) Thanks in advance...

I am trying to use GUSTALKR for reading texts (first call SBOS -o2,
then GUSTALKR).
It's *very* difficult to figure out the text, because if both primitive
speech generation and the primitive set of pronunciation rules SAY program
seems to have.
Is there anything better out there?

Hi all,
I've seen numerous suggestions/reasons for buying a SB and plugging it in
alongside my Gus, however, I have a query on this:
If I did the above, how would it work for those games that use 1 card for
music and another for effects.
For example there is a game that I play (can't remember the name of the game)
where I load the megaem s/w, and have the game set up as Roland for music,
and SB for effects/voice.
If I were to install a real SB in my machine, would I have to stop loading
megaem?
Your curiously,

Where is GUS0041?? I tried wuarchive.wustl.edu, archive.epas.utoronto.ca
and garbo.uwasa.fi today and couldn't find anything! FAQ says the newest
version of Ultramid is 2.06, but all I could find was 1.05.
Please tell me what I did wrong!

Something's still not right with your ultrasnd.ini file if this is
the case. Grab gus0041.zip, delete ultrasnd.ini from your \ultrasnd
directory, and install.

The only possible problem I see is the use of IRQ 7 for the GF1 IRQ. Use
IRQ 5 instead (the SB/MIDI IRQ can be 7 -- it's not that critical).
DOOM 1.2 does have some lock-up problems with the GUS. There's not much
you can do about them except wait for 1.3 or go back to 1.1. TSRs and
memory managers might contribute to your problems, so try clean booting.

I tried this the other night, bumped up the number of sounds from 4 to 8.
The number of simultaneous sounds increased (adds to the game's realism), and I
couldn't notice any slowdown.
Just another indication that GUS is THE soundcard for DOOM.

These seems to be a problem with version 1.2 only. I have none of these problems
with version 0.99. I got the 1.2 upgrade and was just about to order when I
realized there was a serious problem with this version and the GUS.
Is there a fix coming from ID? I am itching to order so I can play the other
episodes.

Subject: High freqs fading?
Hi, I just got a PAS16Basic to replace an old SB 2.0 which has been working
with my GUS 2.2 for so many time. The sound quality of the GUS was far better
than the SB 2.0. But now playing some WAVs or MODs files I've found the PAS
sounding better than the GUS, crisppier and clearer. The GUS seemed to have
a roll off on the high frequencies and this is very notorious when you're
playing the same file with both cards at the same time.
Is this a problem with my GUS or it's just like that? Have anybody of you
compared your GUS with a PAS? I hope it's only a matter of replacing the
output capacitors/filters of my GUS' line-out.
Thanks for any help.
Juan Leon.

Adlib SB, Roland. No GUS no 3d. I did not buy it. Also the review in
PCFormat made no mention of the GUS.
Strange that.

Only 1meg of ROM? Are you SURE? Does that mean CL went through the trouble
of putting on an EMU synthesizer chip with on-board effects, but there are
simply only lousy compressed waveforms to synthesize?
I would think that the MIDI engine has at least 4megabytes ROM, like the
Kalix Soundtrax, SCC1, Waveblaster, etc.
If Kalix ever gets their Soundtrax card shipping, it will be interesting to
see which product wins. CL is an industry standard, regardless of how
good/poor their technical merits are. Kalix's features are in some ways
similar to the SB AWE32 (on board effects, DSP...from Kalix's literature it
looks like the Kalix's DSP capability outstrips CL's ASP), powerful MIDI
engine.
I think that these cards aren't for gamers. The recording capabilities and
ability to make custom patches seem geared more to musicians than gamers.

Subject: Sound Blaster Compatibility needed?
I've seen the complaints about soundblaster compatibility of GUS beaten to
death by following the digest for almost a year now. I agree totally with the
opinion of Neal Stougton in his response to Shannon Miller's request that
Gravis build a 100% compatible Sound Blaster daughtercard for the GUS.
a) The Soundblaster Basic (the old Sound Blaster Pro w/o midi cable and seq.
software) was advertised for $59 in my Sunday Best Buy ad. I don't see how
Gravis could build a daughtercard that would be cheaper or more compatible than
this!
b) The Gus expansion connector can only take on add-on option. Currently
Gravis offers two daughtercards that will consume this connector, the CD-Rom
adapter(s) and the 16-bit recording card. I realized this too late when I
purchased the CD-Rom adapter for my Misumi CD-Rom drive, now I find I can't use
the 16 Bit recording card, without sacrificing my CD-Rom adapter.
Myself, I find that soundblaster emulation is becoming less and less important
everyday (with megaem and AIL drivers and native support, which all sound much
better than a soundblaster anyway). And contrary to what I've read in the
digest, Sbos usually can perform the job if you have to resort to it. But for
those who don't feel they can sleep at night without absolute confidence they
have 100% Soundblaster compatibility, I think getting a Soundblaster Basic for
$59 from Best Buy is the ultimate answer. If you don't have a Best Buy in
your area, I believe they will sell mail order and I seem to remember they even
have a 1-800 number. I'd even be willing to buy a card for someone and ship it
to them if they paid $10 for my effort and shipping costs, just so the whining
about Soundblaster compatibility would go away. Didn't most people buy the
GUS because it sounds better than the SoundBlaster?

Thanks a lot for your comments but your suggestion concerning ultrajoy
does not make sense. You say "the new ultrajoy in the GUS0041 file fixes
the problem" Well the whole point of the post was to tell people that
they DONT WORK!!!! The new ultrajoy does NOT fix it. I do not have the
old ultrajoy, gus0041 wrote the new ultrajoy over the top of it!
But never mind. It all works fine for me now. Your comments regarding my
suggestions to other users is fair enough. You were lucky that yours
worked. Mine did not and maybe there are others out there who will have
problems. Using my suggested method, You can garantee there will be no
problem. With just letting install do it's job there may be problems. It
is up to you GUS users what you do.

We just got the new 3.7 GUSes here in Perth, and I am very impressed
with the all the Software in em?! The come with the 3.1 rev disks
and 2 bonus disks with Epic Pinball and Wavelite on them.
All in all, about 8 disks all together!
I must say, then installation 'now' is very easy. I remember when
I got my v2.2 GUS and all I had in there was the blue 720k disks!
Things have surely changed and I think they've got it right now.
And, it was VERY easy to install. I watched a 'non-guser' install
one herself and setup the whole thing up and even use Megaem!!
(and GOT IT too work?!) Well, it amazes me what reading the manual
can do? *grin*
Anyways, hats off Gravis!!
